Usually, there's only one or two, but now there's been at least four or five in each cast. Gabon was the worst, but the last season and this season haven't been very different. To recap:

Ben was a class A jerk.
Yasmin was pretty rude.
Laura was spiteful.
Shambo has been equally spiteful.
And Russell, albeit justified, has been really pretentious.

Nothing really to complain about, since strategy's the main criteria for me, but it's something I've noticed. I'm not saying it's totally scripted like "person A will do this and person B will say this so person C will be voted out, got that?", but I kind of think that the idol was set at the right place at the right time with the right people so the "right" thing would happen.

Naturally, Survivor wants high ratings, so the show would want things to be shaken up as often as possible. And given the arbitrary way the rules can be changed in the slightest at any given time, it gives the show the ability to kind of set up things in order to get the "intended" results. Again, not saying it's like everyone knows everything and plays along a certain way by the show's dictation, but think about it. How much do you want to bet the producers want Russell to stay on as long as possible? How much do you think the producers were thinking he could use another idol, and that he would be the one to look for another, even without clues? How much do you think the show would have flat-lined in excitement if Foa Foa had no way to defend the upcoming vote? I could be wrong, but like I said, it all just seemed a little too convenient.

It's not even like this is the first time something relatively unusual happened that completely altered the predicted outcome in the end. In Gabon, when there were ten left, it was extremely likely that the members of Fang were going to be decimated. If they merged, the vote would likely be 6-4 and they'd lose, and if they didn't, it was equally likely they would simply lose the next immunity challenge and have to vote one of their members out. But, rather than either of the two expected situations, they mixed up tribes again, offering another "right place/right time/right people" situation, that just happened to work. From there, Fang was able to work another player into switching, and completely changed their place in the game.

I will say one more time, that I do not know anything that happens within Survivor and whether any of this is actually true, but it's a thought.
