Yes, I'm sure they knew before the finale who they were picking. Whether they began recording a week ago or three weeks ago, I have no idea. I don't think the decision was made more than three weeks ago, though. Because that was when did his original song and it was so well received. He got the viewer-voted encore, and the band really liked it.
I think the reason they're calling it a "co-written" song is because while JD did write the lyrics, the track was already recorded by INXS, so they've got as much to do with it as the lyricist. As we've already mentioned (in another thread here) I think the final outcome could have been influenced more by the songwriting clinic/skills than by the actual performances. I read in one of the few post-finale interviews that the band was actually really impressed that JD went off by himself to write that song rather than staying with his group and doing a song he didn't support. Makes me wonder what could have happened if Marty and group had taken his lyrics (or more of them) instead of insisting on Jordis's. Then it would have been a group song, rather than JD's individually. Perhaps they wouldn't have been so impressed, and he wouldn't have been able to use it as an original in later weeks, admittedly the turning point in the series for his favor.
Also, I remember reading that when they were writing the originals, JD had to get permission from all his teammates to sing the Pretty Vegas song because they did all collaborate for a while, and some of the "group-lyrics/ideas" were incorporated into JD's song. What if they hadn't given permission???
Some of his supporters on another board have repeatedly and enthusiastically claimed that if he hadn't been able to use Pretty Vegas, he would have been able to come up with something just as good. I think not. How many times was it reported that he has no musical training? He had the most primitive and basic ideas of communicating with the house band about how he wanted to change his songs musically (remember - whap! whap! whap! ???) and I do not think he would have been able to write the musical track and the lyrics for another song as catchy as Pretty Vegas. (Ok, I admit it, I actually like that song... not JD, just the song! I swear!) While Marty and MiG and Ty were always seen to be helping the other contestants write (and also, all three have been in their own band before, while JD has not), JD had one original piece. One. And the second attempt (final three)was dismal at best - didn't Andrew himself say JD came in with almost nothing and they worked out the rest of the second song together? Again, it was only lyrics. Not that lyrics aren't important, but I would think that the actual music would be more difficult to write. Maybe that's just a non-musician's opinion, though... |
