Eugene couple to compete on 'The Amazing Race' | KVAL CBS 13

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Married beekeepers Anita, 63, and Arthur Jones, 61, from Eugene, Ore., are the oldest — and perhaps most colorful — team on this season of "The Amazing Race."

Among the self-described hippies' mottos: "Don't worry, be hippie" and "The hokey pokey is what it's all about."

Before the race, the Joneses worked out in hopes of keeping up with the other teams.

"We both tried to do some training, along the lines of going down to our little gym, but that was pretty much it," said Anita. "We have an emerging farm, so we do a lot of work out there, splitting wood and taking care of the horses. We're pretty physical, so we thought, 'Hey, we can be in there with everybody else. It'll be fun.

reality blurred + Amazing Race won't switch to HD; 13 new teams visited Kazakhstan, where locals feared another Borat

CBS has announced the 11 teams who will compete as part of the 13th Amazing Race, which debuts Sept. 28.
In a story about the new season, executive producer Betram van Munster told the AP that despite Survivor’s switch to high definition, his show won’t switch to high definition anytime soon. “I don’t think it’s a priority. We’re just happy to continue making the show as it is.”
He also said that, for the first time, the show visited Kazakhstan, perhaps best known to American audiences as the fictional home of Sacha Baron Cohen’s character Borat. “We shot most of that episode in the capital. People were a little afraid we were going to pull a ‘Borat’ on them. I told them we weren’t doing ‘Borat,’ but what happened there is very, very funny. It’s not easy to shoot in places like that because they practically have no television industry,” van Munster said.
As to the new teams, seven of the 11 teams are male-female, and there are just two male-only teams this season, neither of which seems like the sort of team of 20- or 30-something guys who’ve dominated the race in the past. That said, the teams sound very familiar: a “bickering” couple, blonde “southern belles”, fraternity brothers, and a separated married couple. There’s old couple is comprised of two beekeeping super-hippies, and if you think I’m kidding, just look at their photo.

'Amazing Race' beats 'Idol,' wins 6th Emmy - Los Angeles Times

Award shows are routinely derided as nothing more than popularity contests. That cannot be said about the Emmy winner for outstanding reality competition, which -- yet again -- went to CBS' "The Amazing Race."

The race-around-the-globe reality series, while certainly respectable in the ratings, is no match for much of its reality show competitors, most notably, Fox's " American Idol" -- television's most popular show (not to mention ABC's " Dancing With the Stars").

And yet, since the creation of the Emmy category, all six awards have gone to "The Amazing Race."

The Amazing Race 13: Premiere Recap

The Amazing Race 13 has arrived with a handful of interesting teams. In a premiere like tonight's, it's impossible to fully form real opinions on all the teams. Many of the teams in the middle of the pack tonight got little time on camera. We'll get to know them later. The teams we did get footage of gave us a good impression of what we can expect from them throughout the season. As a view and a fan, it's good to know that not all the teams are likable. In fact, there is one team in particular that is wholly deserving of our vitriol.

Leg 1: Los Angeles, CA >> Salvador, Brazil

The teams arrived at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Their first clue told them to drive to LAX and catch one of two flights to Salvador, Brazil. Six teams made the early flight, five on the second. The first clue led them to a sandwich shop, where the teams had to wheel an old vending cart through the streets and to a plaza. From the plaza, the teams took cabs to a military base, where they spent the night after receiving one of three departure times for the following day. The next morning, teams made their way to the Pelourinho neighborhood of Salvador. From there, the Detour: Hard Way Up or Soft Way Down. In Hard Way Up, teams had to crawl up a huge flight of neighborhood stairs, then answer a mystery question (“How many stairs did you just climb?”). In Soft Way Down, teams went up a massive elevator and then rappelled down a cargo net 240 feet above the ground.

11th Place/Eliminated: Anita and Arthur

These two old beekeepers were quite lovely. Anita and Arthur are hippies of the highest order, and they clearly love each other and had a great time on their one leg of the race. Unfortunately, the elder hippies were just too slow and lackadaisical to compete on the race. They will be missed.

10th Place: Marisa and Brooke

We didn't seem much from these ladies, but they don't seem like the sharpest tools in the shed. However, they did seem like nice enough humans.

9th Place: Anthony and Stephanie

Anthony has a grin constantly plastered on his mug. I like him. Anyone who smiles all the time is hard to dislike. Stephanie is cute, motivated. We didn't get a lot of screen time with the two, but they could be wild cards.

8th Place: Aja and Ty

Aja was unable to carry her bags while running, forcing Ty to lug two sets of bags during the first leg. That will get real old real fast. Besides that, Aja and Ty get along very well.

7th Place: Andrew and Dan

Andrew and Dan jumped head-on into the stereotypical frat guy personas they should have actively been trying to play down. It's not a terrible thing. They were entertaining, in a way, but they were also pretty arrogant. They'll keep things interesting this season, to say the least.

6th Place: Toni and Dallas

Toni is going to slow Dallas up all season. Dallas is an athlete, a young guy in great shape, but it's going to be his mental prowess which will either cost the mother-son duo the game or allow them to advance far.

5th Place: Kelly and Christy

Kelly and Christy are cool. I like them. Like most teams, their screen time was limited in the premiere, so the jury is still out.

4th Place: Mark and Bill

Nerds! They seemed quite capable. Mark and Bill might be the smartest team on the race, but they aren't physically equipped (they had to take a break half way down the cargo net). I don't know foresee Mark and Bill winning the whole thing, but they could easily make it deep into the game.

3rd Place: Terence and Sarah

Terence and Sarah are both in great physical shape. The same cannot be said for their mental fortitude. Terence is a big-time jerk. He treated Sarah like absolute crap throughout the entire episode, yelling at her for things like speaking while climbing the net and commiserating with other teams. Terence is easily the most despicable player on The Amazing Race.

2nd Place: Ken and Tina

Ken is a badass. He's an ex-NFL player, and his mental facilities remain intact. Tina is in good shape. If the two of them can put their past behind them (they are married, but separated when Ken cheated on Tina, now they're trying to patch things up), Ken and Tina are fully capable of winning the race.

1st Place: Nick and Starr

Nick and Starr played a great leg. No mistakes, solid all-around. They are energetic, supportive of one another and are on the same page at all times – exactly the kind of relationship you'd expect siblings to have. I feel good about Nick and Starr at least making it to the final four or five

Exclusive Interview: Anita and Arthur, from 'The Amazing Race 13'

Anita and Arthur really didn't stand a chance. It's not their fault. The older beekeepers from Oregon were at a severe physical disadvantage the second they entered The Amazing Race. The fact that they were eliminated on the very first leg is not a big surprise, but it doesn't matter. Anita and Arthur didn't expect to win The Amazing Race. For them, it was all about the experience. And they fully enjoyed and embraced their brief time on the race. The Amazing Race hasn't had a more adorable team in its history than the hippie farmers. We had the chance to speak with them earlier today about their time on the show.

Hey this is Oscar Dahl from BuddyTV and I'm here with Anita and Arthur from The Amazing Race. How are you guys doing?

Anita: Oh, we're good. Hi!

Were you two fans of The Amazing Race before getting cast on the show?

Anita: Yes we were, very much.

Arthur: I'd say Anita was more than I. She watched it consistently and once in a while she'd say "Arthur, you gotta come look at this," and I'd drop what I was doing go look at it and say "Oh, look, that is so neat," and I'd go back to what I was doing.

How did you two end up getting cast on the show?

Anita: We saw an ad on the TV that said send in an application for The Amazing Race and so we sent in a video, a three minute video, and we were very surprised when they called us.

How different was actually being on the race compared to what you expected going in?

Arthur: I don't think we anticipated the amount of adrenaline we felt.

Anita: You can't calm yourself down, you're so excited.

How far behind actually did you finish from the tenth place team, do you know?

Arthur: We have no idea.

Looking back on your one leg, what do you two think you could have maybe done differently to not have finished last?

Anita: I think we could have moved faster making the decision to go (on the detour). We did see people on the bottom of the net - I don't know if we were that far behind. But, we could have talked things over rather than just have gone.

What was your favorite part of being on the race? Did you enjoy brazil? Did you get the chance to sit back and enjoy the experience at all?

Anita: Just being with everyone, being with the whole production was so incredible for us. Just to watch how everything works and getting to meet all these new people in our life, whether it be the production people or the people on the teams. It was absolutely amazing.

What was the most difficult part of the race for you two?

Arthur: I think maybe in 20/20 hindsight, running up the stairs out of the Coliseum. That climb. We worked out in our local gym, swam laps, worked in the exercise room and everything, but for such an extended stair climb, there was no way we could have prepped for it.

Were there any of your fellow teams that you particularly hit it off with, anyone you still keep in contact with?

Anita: Actually, we pretty much keep in contact with everybody.

Arthur: Sarah and Terence more than others. We've been in contact with them. At the same time, it's been more emailing everybody.

Do you two have any big plans for the future? Back to work there in Oregon?

Anita: We'd do the race again in a second.

Maybe another all-stars?

Anita: Yeah. And we are back to blueberries and honey in Oregon.

Arthur: We have a zip line coming up that we're going to do.

Anita: Yeah, a quarter mile zip line. We're pretty excited about that.

Anita, Arthur, we appreciate you taking the time and wish you luck in the future.

Anita: Thank you very much.

The Amazing Race 13: Episode 2 Recap

Major mishaps tend to happen rarely on The Amazing Race. People get lost all the time, yes, but usually it's merely a result of not being able to spot what they're looking for. They almost always know where to look for and what they're supposed to find. On tonight's episode of The Amazing Race 13, there were a lot of major mishaps, and they involved the misreading of clues. This shouldn't happen. If you've seen The Amazing Race before, which I presume all of the current teams have, you know that it is imperative that you read exactly what you're supposed to. Tonight was one of those semi-disappointing Amazing Race episodes where teams stayed in the same country for the entire leg. Brazil is a pretty damn big country, I guess, so it's all good.

Leg 2: Salvador, Brazil > Fortaleza, Brazil

Teams left early in the morning for the Salvador airport. They had to find a flight to Fortaleza, Brazil. Everyone ended up getting on the same 645am flight to Fortaleza. Once landed, teams took taxis to the village of Cumbuco, and had to find their clue at the Praca do Combuco. They then made their way to the beach and took buggies down the coast to Barraca de Manuel, where they encountered a Detour: Beach It or Docket. In Beach It, teams took a buggy further down the beach and had to transport a small sailboat down the beach and into an inlet, using an ancient stone-rolling technique. In Docket, teams went to a shipyard, searched through a computer database for a matching container number, then had to use the number to find the container in the shipyard. Teams then took taxis to the Parque de Vaquejada, where they encountered a Road Block. One player had to search a 600 foot wall filled with graffiti to find their next destination, which was written somewhere on the wall. That destination was Cidade da Crianca, back in Fortaleza, which was the leg's pit stop.

10th Place/Eliminated: Anthony and Stephanie

Anthony and Stephanie just ran a very mediocre race. Nothing special about the mediocrity. They didn't really have any massive screw-ups. Their most egregious lack of game play came when Anthony took forever to find the destination on the wall. He was clueless. We didn't spend any time at all with these two this season, so it's hard to get upset with their elimination.

9th Place: Marisa and Brooke

Not the smartest girls in the world, but they get it done. They wanted to go to Docket on the Detour, but they messed up and ended up at Beach It. That really hurt them, because the physicality of that challenge took its toll. They lost a lot of ground there, and were lucky not to be eliminated.

8th Place: Andrew and Dan

Andrew took ages at the wall. He almost gave up at one point – frustration really set in. It was one of those challenges where the players were killed when they tried to over think things.

7th Place: Kelly and Christy

It's a small wonder they weren't eliminated. They mis-read the clue on the Detour, and searched for a container that applied to the Docket clue for a long time. Their fruitless search cost them a couple of places. Even so, they finished the wall road block early, but thought their taxi had left. After trying to hail one for some time, they finally realized their taxi was waiting for them the whole time.

6th Place: Nick and Starr

Nick had a hell of a time trying to figure out the wall challenge. He read far too much into it, and tried to combine words, thought maybe the answer was color-coded. Still, I think this is a team to be reckoned with going forward.

5th Place: Toni and Dallas

Toni and Dallas get the Good Samaritan award this week. They stopped and told Terence and Sarah, after the road block, where to pick up their taxi. Terence and Sarah were hopelessly lost and, without the help of Toni and Dallas, may have been eliminated tonight. Good on them, but I would have been ruthless and let them wander.

4th Place: Aja and Ty

They dominated the Beach It Detour, and made up a lot of ground in the process. These two are going to be good. They get along exceedingly well, and are both athletic. Plus, they're likable.

3rd Place: Terence and Sarah

These guys are going to fight it out on every leg. Terence is so damn sensitive all the time, and when you combine that with how he is ruthlessly mean to Sarah so often, the combustibility factor is always going to be high. However, that being said, they are fast and in great shape and competitive as all hell. They could win, they could get eliminated next week. It's a toss-up.

2nd Place: Mark and Bill

They were the only team to pick Docket, and it worked out wonderfully. Even though it was a needle in a haystack kind of challenge, they rocked it because, well, they are very smart. I'm completely on the nerd bandwagon at this point. Really nice guys, these two.

1st Place: Ken and Tina

Ken is an all-world athlete and he's trying to impress his formerly estranged wife. That adds up to one scarily motivated machine of a man, who could lead his team to victory. Tina's no pushover either, though she got a little annoying tonight in the airport. Still – it showed that Tina is confident, and is the kind of person who gets things done, doesn't take no for an answer. They have a great chance of winning the million.

The Amazing Race 13: Episode 3 Recap

The Amazing Race 13 has a definitive favorite right now. Ken and Tina, the formerly estranged married couple, are dominating. It helps to have Ken, a former NFL safety, anchoring the squad, but Tina is no slouch either. Both Ken and Tina have good heads on their shoulders, and have turned out to be a perfect Amazing Race team thus far, having won two of the first three legs. Tonight's episode saw The Amazing Race teams head to the high altitude of La Paz, Bolivia. There were epic blunders, brutal falls off wooden bikes and the start of what may prove to be an entertaining cat fight.

Leg 3: Fortaleza, Brazil > La Paz, Bolivia

The teams departed in the morning from Fortaleza and were told to take a flight to La Paz, Bolivia. Once there, teams had to taxi to a downtown statue of Simon Bolivar and wait for the morning paper. In the morning paper's classifieds, teams found their next clue. The clue inside the paper informed teams to head to the Narvaez Hat Shop in Plaza Murillo for their next clue. Once there, teams encountered a Detour: Musical March or Bumpy Ride. In Musical March, teams walked through the city, picking up various members of a marching band on the way. In Bumpy Ride, teams rode old-school wooden bikes throughout the city. At the end of the detour, a U-Turn was made available. No one used it. Once the detour was completed, teams were told to take a taxi to Los Titanes del Ring, where they found a Road Block. One member of each team had to learn how to become a Fighting Cholita, who are basically WWE fighters in the form of Bolivian women. The players had to rehearse a series of wrestling moves and then perform them successfully in front of a crowd. After completing the Road Block, teams took taxis to the leg's pit stop at the Mirador el Monticulo.

9th Place/ Eliminated: Mark and Bill

After acquiring their hat, they read the clue wrong for the Detour. Instead of walking, they took a taxi. This cost them, as they incurred a thirty minute penalty at the pit stop. However, what really killed them was their pitiful performance at the Fighting Cholita arena, where Mark took three tries to perform the wrestling moves correctly. Awful performance there, sending the nerds to the back of the pack and, ultimately, their elimination.

8th Place: Kelly and Christy

They ran a terrible leg, and were only saved by Mark and Bill's inability to correctly read their clue or fake wrestle. Christy is not a great bike rider either, falling a couple times and almost breaking her face open. But the real story is their new feud with Nick and Starr. Kelly and Christy think that Starr pushed one of their sports bras off a ledge in between legs two and three. They decide to hate Starr, and that hatred has only intensified after Aja informed Kelly that Starr asked her and Ty to use the U-Turn on Kelly and Christy. They were lucky to survive the leg, but I think they should be better going forward.

7th Place: Andrew and Dan

Solid leg, and they should have finished much higher if it weren't for a crappy taxi driver. But, they played a good leg.

6th Place: Nick and Starr

Did Starr push a sports bra off a ledge? Who cares? I doubt she would have done that, because it seems like a completely unnecessary thing to do. But, regardless, it created a rift between the two teams, and one that won't go away any time soon. These two are really good athletes, as evidenced by their impressive wrestling and biking performances. However, the promo for next week's show sees Starr getting badly hurt. Let's hope CBS is faking us out.

5th Place: Aja and Ty

They did fine on this leg, but the promo for next week shows them in the middle of what appears to be an ugly stand-off. They won't even talk to each other. These things happen when you travel with a significant other for the first time. I like both of these people, so I hope that they quickly get over their rift.

4th Place: Marisa and Brooke

I don't know how they finished this high. They had trouble with the wrestling, but did well with the marching band. Their taxi drivers were really good. That's all I can say. Maybe they learned from their poor performances in the first two legs.

3rd Place: Terence and Sarah

Not too much fighting this leg. Like Mark and Bill, they misread the clue and took a cab to the detour, but unlike the nerds, they realized their mistake before it was too late and went back and walked. They came from way behind at the wrestling arena to finish in third, thanks to a very good cabbie and a lot of hustle.

2nd Place: Toni and Dallas

Nothing special, just a solid and gritty performance from these two. Dallas rocked the wrestling road block, and Toni managed to get through the Detour better than one would have imagined.

1st Place: Ken and Tina

The leaders in the clubhouse once again. These two are the best team on the race, despite their advanced age. Very impressive thus far.

The Amazing Race 13: Episode 4 Recap

The sweet stench of inevitability reared its head tonight on The Amazing Race 13. I knew that I should have known better. In my Amazing Race predictions articles, the first two weeks I predicted Marisa and Brooke to be eliminated. I predicted the two Southern Belles to be eliminated not because of any personal or arbitrary grudge, but because I objectively deemed Marisa and Brooke the worst team left in the game. This, I contend, was a fair assessment, yet they were able to advance to the fourth leg through nothing more complicated than blind luck. Yet, this week, I bucked the logic that led me to those first two elimination predictions, and went another way. For the first time, I picked a different team to be eliminated and, of course, Marisa and Brooke were eliminated on tonight's Amazing Race.

Leg 4: La Paz, Bolivia > Auckland, New Zealand > Te Puke, New Zealand

Teams departed late at night from La Paz and were told to fly directly to Auckland, New Zealand. Every team managed to get on the exact same flight. From the airport, teams found their marked cars and had to drive to Gulf Harbour. Once there, teams had to unravel a big knot, in which their next clue could be found. In addition to the clue, there was a Fast Forward, one of two on the season. In the fast forward, teams headed to Sky Tower and climb the maintenance shaft and acquire a gnome. The first team to do this got a helicopter ride to the pit stop. The other teams head to Mount Eden.

At Mount Eden, teams encountered a Road Block. At the Road Block, one member of each team encountered a horde of Maori tribesmen. They were given a tribal tattoo pattern and had to match it with the correct tribesmen to get their next clue. That next clue told teams to head to the City Life Hotel, where they had to find a hidden gnome somewhere in the city using binoculars. Once they find the gnome, their next clue told them to drive to Kiwi 360. Once there, teams encountered a Detour: Matter of Time or Matter of Skill. In Matter of Time, teams had to smash Kiwis using their feet until they created 12 quarts of juice. In Matter of Skill, teams assembled two Blokarts and rode them around a track three times. After completing the Detour, teams went to the pit stop at Summer Hill.

Eighth Place/Eliminated: Marisa and Brooke

They had an impossible time trying to find the knot in the harbour. Once they found it, they had a pretty good leg, but they were way too far behind for it to matter. Marisa and Brooke were simply not a very good Amazing Race team, despite being decent individuals. We'll have an interview with the two of them tomorrow.

Seventh Place: Aja and Ty

Aja and Ty had some troubles on this fourth leg of the race, but their bickering was almost endearing. They got over it quickly, and returned to the somewhat adorable couple that they've shown to be over the first month of the season. They got bad luck early on in the leg, thanks to a flat tire, otherwise they would have placed more towards the middle of the pack.

Sixth Place: Andrew and Dan

Solid leg from Team Superbad, though they thought they might have been eliminated when they got to the pit stop. They foolishly tried to go for the Fast Forward, even when they thought Ken and Tina were also going for it. But, the frat guys live to see another day.

Fifth Place: Nick and Starr

Starr hurt herself on the Flokart Detour, but she toughed it out and made it to the end. The feud with Kelly and Christy continues, but who cares? Feuds rarely matter in any tangible way on The Amazing Race.

Fourth Place: Toni and Dallas

These two could be a sleeper favorite this season. Toni isn't very fast, but Dallas is a physical force. They're meshing well, and have run two really good legs in a row.

Third Place: Kelly and Christy

I still contend that these two could become the first ever female team to ever win The Amazing Race. They dominated the Detour, and jumped a number of places.

Second Place: Terence and Sarah

A very quiet race from a normally volatile team. They took the pole position early, and kept it the entire time, not messing up once.

First Place: Ken and Tina

Ken and Tina took advantage of their early lead and went straight for the Fast Forward. They had no competition and once they completed the Fast Forward task, they skated (via helicopter) to first place. Ken and Tina are easily the best team on The Amazing Race thus far.
