Angry Problems with Survivor Samoa

Russell does irritate people, but he is just playing the game...what i have a problem with is the pronunciation of the team; Galu! It is not pronounced that way and the producers of the show should have at least done their homework on pronunciation. As a Samoan, I feel that we as a people take certain thoughts in to names and why it is we use a certain name. I keep getting pissed every time they chant their name because of the pronunciation. Can't blame the participants because that is the pronunciation they were given....typical of palagi's to assume that every language would have the same phonetic sound as the English language. My second problem with the show is that on the first survivor series, participants had to learn from scratch. How is it the girls knew how to weave the leaves already? Why couldn't they have shown the girls trying to figure out how to do what with whatever resources they had...then they all had their Samoan bags (ako) or purses...what a great disappointment!

I'm sure 1/2 the production team is Samoan--why didn't anyone speak up?

Unhappy Right

I do not think that half the production team is Samoan, because as Samoans, we do try to help non-Samoans on pronunciation. It does show that no one even asked, because the pronunciation is a far cry to how it really sounds, far cry! So with all the planning beforehand, (you know they have to fly to countries and set up plans with the locals) how is it they never learned how to pronounce anything? When it was first known that Survivor Series was going to Samoa, many Samoans wrote in on Facebook, hoping that our culture wouldn't be misrepresented....at least get the pronunciation right!

Another example of the Survivor production staff's disdain for the viewers and even the players of the game. What sloppy research! They want to throw in all these facts that make us think they care about the location and the people in that location, but they don't care whether it's right or wrong. I feel insulted by them in almost every way lately, but I hope they enjoy their fame and fortune. That's what they're in it for, regardless of any cost. The saving grace is that we all think they are stupid and that is some consolation, I suppose.

they mispronounced a word... so what! maybe a local could have pointed it out... but didn't...

you misspelled an english word... its pronounciation...not pronunciation...
being a local...i thought i'd point that out before someone else goes into a tail spin over your simple mistake...

I just wanted to make sure you knew who I was talking to....The person that needs the dictionary is........? Whoever spelled the word pronounciation!!!! I
can't stop laughing. You're just like the producers! Do your research first and then you won't open yourself up to ridicule.

Let's see, this is 2009 and your dictionary is what year? Oh well, I am sure you rarely use it. But the internet has all kinds of dictionaries and resources other than Google, so next time you need to berate someone over their spelling of a word, you might check it first. But maybe you're shooting to get a job as a real member of the production staff of Survivor. Obviously, good research skill is not a requirement.
